Designing and maintaining a clean room involves careful planning and implementation of various factors, such as:

 

- The level of cleanliness required for the specific processes and products. This is usually measured by the number and size of particles per cubic meter of air, according to the ISO 14644-1 standard. For example, ISO 5 (class 100) means that there are no more than 100 particles of 0.5 microns or larger per cubic meter of air. The lower the ISO number, the cleaner the room.

 

- The layout and configuration of the clean room. This includes the size, shape, location, and orientation of the room, as well as the placement of equipment, furniture, doors, windows, vents, filters, and lighting. The layout and configuration should optimize the airflow and minimize the generation and accumulation of contaminants.

 

- The construction materials and methods used for the clean room. This includes the walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, and seals. The materials should be smooth, non-shedding, non-porous, easy to clean, and resistant to corrosion and chemicals. The methods should ensure that the clean room is airtight and isolated from external sources of contamination.

 

- The HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system that provides the clean room with filtered and conditioned air. The HVAC system should maintain the temperature, humidity, pressure, and airflow within the specified ranges for the clean room. The filters should be able to remove particles of different sizes and types from the incoming air. The HVAC system should also have a backup power source in case of power failure.

 

- The personnel who work in or enter the clean room. They should wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment, such as gloves, masks, goggles, caps, gowns, boots, and suits. They should also follow strict protocols for entering and exiting the clean room, such as using air showers or air locks to remove any contaminants from their bodies or clothes. They should also avoid any activities that could generate or introduce contaminants into the clean room, such as eating, drinking, smoking, or applying cosmetics.

 

- The cleaning and disinfection procedures that are performed regularly to remove any contaminants that may have accumulated in the clean room. This includes wiping down surfaces with sterile wipes or solutions, vacuuming floors with HEPA filters, changing filters and air ducts periodically, sterilizing equipment and instruments with heat or chemicals, and testing the air quality and particle counts regularly.

 

Designing and maintaining a clean room is a complex and costly process that requires expertise and experience. However, it is also a worthwhile investment that can ensure the quality and safety of your products and processes. By following the best practices and standards for clean room design and maintenance, you can achieve optimal results for your industry.
