I will explain how many types of pass box are used in the pharmaceutical industry and what are their functions and features. A pass box is a device that allows the transfer of materials between different areas of a cleanroom or a controlled environment without compromising the air quality and the sterility. Pass boxes are essential for preventing cross-contamination and maintaining the integrity of the products and processes.
According to Cleanroom Technology, there are two types of pass box used in the pharmaceutical industry:
- Static or passive: This type of pass box is designed for the transfer of materials between areas with the same cleanliness class, without a filtration system. It usually has a UV light lamp to remove the contamination that may enter during the transfer. It also has an interlocking mechanism that prevents both doors from opening at the same time.
- Dynamic or active: This type of pass box is designed for the transfer of materials between areas with different cleanliness classes, with a filtration system. It has a HEPA filter that provides a laminar airflow inside the chamber, creating a positive pressure that prevents the ingress of contaminants from the lower class area. It also has a UV light lamp and an interlocking mechanism.
These are the main types of pass box used in the pharmaceutical industry, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the requirements and specifications of each application, one type may be more suitable than another. Therefore, it is important to select the right type of pass box for your facility and to perform proper qualification and validation procedures to ensure its functionality and performance.
