BIM International Standard ISO 19650

ISO 19650 is a complete set of international standards and standard families for information management using Building Information Modeling (BIM) throughout the entire life cycle of construction assets.

As part of the international standard for information management using Building Information Modeling (BIM), the ISO 19650 - 1 standard presents the concepts and principles of information management described as "BIM according to ISO19650" at the maturity stage.

ISO 19650 - 2 stipulates the requirements for information management and standardizes the key points of information exchange using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the text of the asset delivery stage in the form of management processes and procedures. Currently, two other supporting standards, including ISO 19650 - 3 (asset operation stage) and ISO 19650 - 5 (BIM security considerations, digital environment, and intelligent asset management), are under development.

The ISO 19650 series of standards released this time is mainly based on the PAS 1192 series of standards developed by BSI and is issued and maintained by the Technical Committee ISO/TC 59/SC 13.

The predecessors of these two standards are respectively: BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192 - 2:2013, that is, the standards for information management on the use of Building Information Modeling in British national standards.

The principles of the two sets of standards are consistent. Both are based on the standards of the quality management system (ISO 9001). Through the Plan - Do - Check - Act (PDCA) principle, the ISO 19650 standard still follows the information delivery cycle process mentioned in PAS 1192. The requirements are defined as a set of practical processes with a logical sequence and timeline, and are consistent with the bidding, design, construction, delivery and other links in the engineering construction field.

The concepts of the two sets of standards are consistent, and the differences of the ISO standard are mainly reflected in some terms. For example, the "employer" in the British standard is called the "appointing party" in the ISO standard. For details, please refer to the UK National Forewords and National Annex.

For organizations and information digitization in the field of construction and civil engineering, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) - Information management using Building Information Modeling - Part 1: Concepts and principles.

This standard, based on Building Information Modeling (BIM), presents the concepts and principles of information management described as "BIM according to ISO19650" at the maturity stage. This standard provides and recommends a framework for managing information, including: information exchange, information recording, information versioning, and the organizational planning of active personnel.

This standard is applicable to the entire life cycle of all construction fields, covering strategic planning, pre - design, engineering design, development, documentation and construction, daily operation, maintenance, renovation, repair, and facility decommissioning. The roles involved include owners, operators, customers, asset managers, design teams, construction teams, equipment manufacturers, system experts, policymakers, investors, and end - users.

When formulating this standard, the applicability to different assets or projects is comprehensively considered, and its universality and applicability are achieved based on the scale and characteristics of different projects.

For organizations and information digitization in the field of construction and civil engineering, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) - Information management using Building Information Modeling - Part 2: Asset delivery stage.

This standard defines the requirements for information management and standardizes the content related to the asset delivery stage and information exchange in the use of building information models in the form of management processes. This standard is applicable to all asset types, all types and sizes of organizations, and is not limited by different procurement strategies.

What is ISO?

The International Organization for Standardization is a worldwide international federation composed of national standardization bodies from different countries, dedicated to standardization work in different regions around the world. Currently, it has 162 member states. Relevant international standards are implemented by the technical committees of ISO.

ISO/TC 59/SC 13 is the technical committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the field of information management for BIM. This committee is responsible for formulating and maintaining corresponding standards in the field of organizations and information digitization in the construction and civil engineering fields, including the field of Building Information Modeling (BIM). The member states of this technical committee include 27 member states such as China, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the United States, Canada, and Australia.
