Introduction of ozone generators

An ozone generator is a device used to generate ozone (O3). Ozone is a strong oxidant, second only to fluorine in terms of oxidation ability, and stronger than hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, and other oxidants. Ozone generators convert oxygen (O2) in the air into ozone through specific physical or chemical methods, suitable for various application scenarios.


Working principle of ozone generator

  1. Corona discharge method: This is the most common method for generating ozone. In a space filled with oxygen or air, there are two electrodes. When a sufficiently high voltage (usually thousands to tens of thousands of volts) is applied between the electrodes, the gas will ionize and form a plasma state. In this process, oxygen molecules (O2) are decomposed into oxygen atoms (O), which combine with undecomposed oxygen molecules to form ozone (O3). This process can be simply expressed as: (collision between electrons and oxygen molecules causing oxygen molecules to decompose), (combination of oxygen atoms and oxygen molecules producing ozone).
  2. Ultraviolet irradiation method: Using specific wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation to irradiate oxygen, the energy of ultraviolet radiation can decompose oxygen molecules into oxygen atoms, which then combine with other oxygen molecules to generate ozone. Generally, ultraviolet light with a wavelength of around 185nm is used because this wavelength of ultraviolet light can effectively decompose oxygen molecules. The reaction process is as follows:,. However, compared to the corona discharge method, this method has a relatively lower efficiency in generating ozone.

Application area of ozone generator

  1. Water treatment field:

Disinfection of drinking water: Ozone can effectively kill bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens in water. Compared with traditional chlorine disinfection, ozone disinfection does not produce harmful disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes. And ozone disinfection is fast, which can quickly make the water quality meet drinking standards.

Industrial wastewater treatment: Ozone can decompose organic pollutants in wastewater, such as difficult to degrade organic compounds in printing and dyeing wastewater and pharmaceutical wastewater. It can oxidize complex organic molecules into small organic acids, carbon dioxide, and water, thereby reducing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of wastewater, making it easier to be treated by subsequent biological treatment processes.


In the field of air purification:

Indoor air purification: Ozone can oxidize and decompose harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and benzene in the air. In newly renovated houses, using an ozone generator can help remove harmful gases released by decoration materials. However, it should be noted that ozone itself is also a gas with a pungent odor. When using, the concentration should be controlled to avoid harm to the human body.

  1. Industrial waste gas treatment: For some waste gases containing harmful gases such as sulfides and nitrogen oxides generated in industrial production processes, ozone can undergo oxidation reactions with them, converting them into harmless or easily treatable substances. For example, ozone can oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, which can then be removed by subsequent absorption devices.

4. In the field of food processing:

Food preservation: Ozone can inhibit the growth and reproduction of microorganisms on the surface of food. During the preservation process of fruits and vegetables, the ozone generated by the ozone machine can kill surface fungi and yeast, extending the shelf life of the food.

Disinfection of food workshop: Disinfect the air, equipment surfaces, and packaging materials in the food processing workshop to ensure the hygiene of the food processing environment. For example, in a meat processing workshop, using an auto ozone generator can reduce bacterial growth and improve product quality.
